Clinical and Electroencephalographic Study of Mentally Retarded Children

Abstract
This study was attempted to reveal the clinical features and the electroencephalographic findings in mentally retarded children. The subjects were consisted of 91 cases whom EEG were studied and 49 cases whose intellectual capacity were evaluated during 8 years from 1968 to 1976 at St. Mary¢¥s Hospital, Catholic Medical College. The results were as follows: 1. Mental retardation had the higher incidence in male than female and the ratio was 3 :2 and the highest incidence of the cases was at the age of 5 to 10 years. 2. The common causes of mental retardates were birth injury (23. 1%), meningitis & encephalitis (15.4%), prematurity (8.8%) and head trauma (7.7%). 3. The incidence of seizures were common in younger age group than the older age group and the incidence of attack was 37. 4%. 4. EEG findings were abnormal in 81.3%, borderline in 6.6% and normal in 12.1% of total mental retardates respectively. 5. The major abnormal EEG pattern of mental retardate was slow wave dysrhythmia and it was found in 38.5% of their trace. 6. The incidence of abnormal EEG in severe mental retardate was higher than that of milder group.
